Prayer Request
« on: April 24, 2022, 08:10:09 AM »
What weather in our part of the country!  In the past few days here in Crookston MN we have seen heavy snow, high winds, severe thunderstorms, hail, torrential rains, tornadoes, and now the worst flooding in my 20+ years here.  The city has already given up on several streets and sections, barricading them off and building new levees to protect the remaining parts.  Today is Confirmation Sunday, and as I get ready I can see/hear the heavy equipment right next to the church, feverishly trying to keep ahead of the water.  The phone just rang, with the third automated call asking for help with sandbagging (the others came at 12:30 AM and 3:30 AM).  Your prayers would be welcome!

Just got back from the church.  The city is building another, temporary dike through our school playground.  Had to take down the fence and we may lose some equipment.  They already have a 4-5 foot high sandbag dike next door at Trinity (ELCA) through their parking lot, up to our fence.  Now the question is whether they will be able to finish it on our side before the waters come in.  The predicted crest won't be for another day or two, and is expected to surpass the great 1997 flood that devastated Grand Forks ND.  Several of the bridges through town have been closed and they are evacuating some of the low-lying neighborhoods (like below our church).  We have cancelled classes for our parochial school tomorrow; I felt it would not be good to have the kids there with the potential hazards of floods and heavy equipment.  It is snowing now and temps are dropping to the low 20's tonight, with winds gusting to 40 mph.  Someone said the cold would be good, to slow down the water.  I don't know.  Tomorrow my wife and I will be walking the dikes along with a number of other volunteers, and I think I would prefer something a bit warmer.  And drier.  And less windy.

I will be mindful of your community as I offer these petitions from the Great Ektania twice tomorrow morning during the Orthros and Divine Liturgy for Bright Monday and the Feast of St. George the Great Martyr and Trophybearer.

Quote

For favorable weather, for an abundance of the fruits of the earth, and for peaceful times,
let us pray to the Lord.

( Lord, have mercy. )

For those who travel by land, sea, and air, for the sick, the suffering, the captives and for their salvation,
let us pray to the Lord.

( Lord, have mercy. )

For our deliverance from all affliction, wrath, danger and distress, and from the peril of the coronavirus against us,
let us pray to the Lord.

( Lord, have mercy. )

Good news overnight.  The National Weather Service says the river has crested and that levels should be going down.  The city completed its sandbagging and levee building.  The crest was about a foot and a half less than predicted, so damage should be limited to what we have already seen.  Thank God!  And thank you for your prayers!
