Valpo's Christmas Message
« on: December 22, 2021, 08:25:35 PM »
The 2021 Christmas message from our university's new president seems to hit all the right notes. I'm grateful for his Christ-centered, street-smart leadership.

This is very well done. It is good to know that Valpo is in the hands of committed Christian who appreciates Valpo's long Christian heritage.

These Valpo Presidents are on Mt. Rushmore for their service to the University:

O. P Kretzmann 1940-68
Albert Huegli  1968-78
Robert Schnabel 1978-88
Alan Harre  1988-2008

All four of these men were graduates of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis
and helped to maintain a Lutheran identity for Valparaiso University.

A minor quibble. I don't believe that Robert Schnabel ever graduated from Concordia Seminary. He was not ordained. I should not have to say this but nonetheless Schnabel was a very fine and distinguished Christian leader. He was a master instructor of philosophy at the Senior College and superb administrator at three Lutheran colleges--Concordia, Bronxville, Wartburg, and Valparaiso.

Bob Schnabel was my main philosophy professor (along with a crew including other really excellent professors) at the Senior College.  He was a pfeiffenraucher, and would initiate a dialog between Plato and Aristotle on the theme of the Essence of Pipe-ness.  He also was a golfer who traveled very light, playing with only one club, an adjustable iron.  And his pipe.  Down the fairways we would wander there in Ft. Wayne - follow the smoky trail.  He was godlike in that he could hit a one iron.
