He taught exegetical theology for 25 years at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis(1974-99} & was a parish pastor 22
years (1952-1974). His Concordia Commentary on Revelation is part of the commentary series published

I studied with Brighton when I went through Concordia, St. Louis. He wrote an excellent commentary. As I recall, he was in ill health or had passed on by the time we did the Study Bible, so we worked with other contributors.

Martin H. Franzmann wrote a  commentary on Revelation, The Revelation to John that I have found to be quite accessible on a lay level. The Brighton commentary in the Concordia Commentary Series is an exhaustive and exhausting presentation but hardly one that I would recommend to a lay person. I have given Franzmann's commentary to lay people and they have appreciated it. Franzmann's commentary is apparently out of print, although some copies are available on the used book market and it is available as an ebook on Kindle and Applebooks. Yes, Brighton's presentation was from the Greek text so would be ideal for clergy but high-end for laity and parish use.

My favorite commentary on Revelation is by William Hendrikson and is called "More Than Conquerors".  I believe it's been continually in print since about 1937

Scholarly standards on Revelation would also include the three volumes (52a, b, c) from the Word Biblical Commentary by Aune (Thomas Nelson, 1998), and G.K. Beale's one volume work on the Book of Revelation as part of The New International Greek Testament Commentary (Eerdmans, 1999).

Many years ago when I had a Bible class on this book at my second parish I particularly enjoyed Eugene Peterson's approach in Reversed Thunder: The Revelation of John & the Praying Imagination (Harper & Row, 1988).

When I took Revelation in seminary, we used The Revelation of St. John the Divine, by G. B. Caird. It's part of Harper's New Testament Commentaries, © 1966. For more popular commentaries I have Revelation: God and Satan in the Apocalypse, by James Kallas; Revelation for Today: Images of Hope, by Richard L. Jeske; and one that was part of the ALC's women's magazine Bible study: Courage for Today – Hope for Tomorrow: A Study of Revelation, by Esther Onstad.


I consider the title of the last book to be one of the best summaries of the message of Revelation.


I also, with Charles, recommend The Rapture Exposed: The Message of Hope in the Book of Revelation, by Barbara Rossing. I had it. Loaned it to someone. Never got it back. However, it is less of a traditional commentary on Revelation as the other references.

Revelation and the End of All Things by Craig Koester is an absolutely amazing resource. I used it in teaching Revelation in the congregation. Given how much rot is out there, it is helpful (written by a Lutheran) and also makes some great connections to hymns and the liturgy.
