Bible Study Recommendations?
« on: June 21, 2021, 10:54:35 AM »
Yesterday the lay leader of our Sunday morning adult Bible class approached me and said there was a desire among the class to have a study about government, especially in areas in which the Christian may disagree with governmental practices.  This class meets between services here in town, while I am leading services at the country church, so I am not around to teach it myself.  Looking at CPH, I did not find much.  Does anyone have any recommendations?

This isn't a bible study per se, but the first part (on the Bible witness) and the end (what does this mean for today) are good for discussion - Render Unto Caesar by the CTCR:  https://files.lcms.org/wl/?id=SKeCtLOzKPBIhQmt13FuyXweSJwVahv8

CPH has a resource called, Life by His Word, which includes reproduceable studies for every book and chapter of Scripture. I think they are even downloadable. One might start out talking about family/household as the foundation for government since discipline and care are learned first at home, which God instituted. On the topic of government, your group might cover the following texts:

Genesis 9:5-6. The Lord Commands Retribution
Genesis 41. Joseph Becomes Second to Pharaoh
Exodus 1. Living under Bad Government
Deuteronomy 17:14-20. Moses Describes Judgment and Kingship
Judges 2. Israel goes astray
Nehemiah. A Faithful Government Official
Acts 5. The Apostles Obey God rather than Man
Romans 13. The Role of Government
1 Peter 2:13-25. Christian Citizens

No doubt, others may add other passages and thoughts.

Basic questions:
In view of Scripture, what makes good government?
In view of Scripture, what makes bad government?
How was the relationship of God's people to government different in the Old and New Testaments?
What is my role, responsibility, and privilege as a Christian citizen?
How are you praying for your leadership? Explain the reason for the petitions you voice.

Lutheran Hour Ministries (http://www.lhmmen.com) has a four session video study called "The Intersection of Church & State" http://https://www.lhm.org/men/studydetail.asp?id=21040 .  It can be purchased for $15 + S&H or downloaded for free (you have to register with LHM for downloads). Leader's and Students' guides are reproducible and downloadable.

LHM's Men's Network has a large library of video Bible studies, reasonably priced and most available for free download.
