Return of Forum Online
« on: October 24, 2019, 06:12:44 AM »
We are back online.   :)  Thanks be to God!

And thanks to all subscribers and donors. It does cost money to operate Forum Online. Soon, we will again be asking you (as we do each year) for a donation to the American Lutheran Publicity Bureau. We need your gift to keep operating; please give generously. Watch for our annual appeal and don't put it off. That's if you are a subscriber to the Forum package (Forum Letter and Lutheran Forum).

If you do not subscribe you should still help us pay for the Forum Online you are using. You may send your gift to:

American Lutheran Publicity Bureau  or ALPB
PO Box 327
Delhi, NY 13753

Don't be a cheap freeloader. If you give, thank you in advance.

Peace, JOHN

Based on the number of people who inquired why it was down— contributors and lurkers— I would say this forum still serves an important purpose. Even the fact that you read people who drive you crazy or who are just manifestly wrong in everything they say is, in this day and age, a rare and valuable exposure in a world of bubbles and echo chambers. Donations are key to keeping it together.

The ALPB's Forum Online is a unique place.  Although flying under the banner "Lutheran" it attracts people of a wide variety of Christian traditions, who for the most part, engage in useful and edifying discussion.  And despite the fact that this is a forum from a religious organization, the discussion ranges across the field well outside of the strict boundaries of theology.  I have to admit that I missed it when it was down.  FB and other social media do not accomplish the same purpose.  All that said I almost have to wonder if having occasional periods of extended 'breaks' even from here might not be healthy! :)

Hey-oh, Tom!

Ditto, Peter. I heard from a lot of people, especially lurkers. Here's an idea:

Posters: tithe according to the # of posts you've made.
Lurkers: tithe according to the estimated # of hours you've spent on here.

This year, for the first time and despite some misgivings, I will include ALPB in my end-of-the-year contributions, mostly in gratitude for Moderator Johnson's book on the history of ALPB, and for Editor Stanek's work on the journal.

Richard Johnson's history has gotten two awards this year; one from the Associated Church Press, the other from Concordia Historical Institute.   :)  Your donations support a prestigious institution.

It must have been a "Genesis's minute". Something like a "Genesis's day" - somewhat longer than the usual measurement of those terms (60 seconds; 24 hours).
"The church … had made us like ill-taught piano students; we play our songs, but we never really hear them, because our main concern is not to make music, but but to avoid some flub that will get us in dutch." [Robert Capon, _Between Noon and Three_, p. 148]

The reality is, we are a low-budget operation (to put it mildly), and coding costs money. I don't know how to do it, nor does anybody else who volunteers for ALPB. Which goes back to the point that as readers provide the funding, we will be able to afford a higher quality product. So please take seriously what Fr. Hannah and others are saying.
