NALC bishop election
« on: August 08, 2019, 09:31:15 PM »
Just FYI, here are the full results of the first ballot for bishop of the North American Lutheran Church:

David Wendel 163
Dan Selbo 71
Eric Riesen 69
Amy Schifrin 53
Jim Lehman 46
Ron Hoyum 36
Phil Gagnon 25
Tim Christ 24
Ken Kimbll 22
Cathy Braasch 21
Marshall Hahn 16
Melinda Jones 16
Jeffray Greene 14
Amy Little 11
Abstain/invalid 5

You can listen to the top four speaking at https://www.facebook.com/thenalc/videos/401552344042627/ about two hours and nine minutes in. Interesting stuff. I will say that if the leader, Pr. Wendel, is elected, the hostility between the NALC and ELCA will continue unabated. He pretty clearly is still filled with anger at his former church body, while the other candidates are all looking forward rather than back. My two cents. Let us pray for our brothers and sisters in the NALC as they discern the Holy Spirit's will in this important decision.

Fought some good fights alongside Dan Selbo’s father, Gordon Selbo (Reminded me of the actor Jack Palance) in small breakout rooms in the early days of the ELCA.

Dan is a great guy and a fine pastor, and his speech to the convocation was really very impressive. He's also way at the "low church" end of the NALC spectrum, and my sense is that this cleavage is going to be a continuing tension for the NALC.

Report of second ballot:
Eric Riesen- 187

Amy Schifrin- 31

Dan Selbo- 198

David Wendel- 168

Top three continue to next ballot. Interesting result. Wendel dropped from first to third, only gaining 5 votes. That may suggest he's hit his ceiling. Selbo in first place, but Riesen close behind.

Dan Selbo was in my grad school cohort. I greatly enjoyed his measured and patience outlook at the issues we face in this world.
