Hockey: Who Has a Favorite?
« on: September 09, 2015, 11:23:45 PM »
It will soon be time for hockey.  As a Minnesotan, I am partial to our entry in the NHL, the Wild.  It could be an exciting season.  The Big Ten hockey tournament will be held in St. Paul this year.  The University of Minnesota is strong in both womens' and mens' hockey and each team has its own arena.   High school hockey is big here.  Some Minnesota chauvinists call this "The State of Hockey."

For the first time, I hope to be a part of this.

Minnesota is a great hockey state!

My favorite teams are the St. Louis Blues and the Washington Capitals and the Columbus Blue Jackets,  in that order. There is a United Hockey League team in this area that I hope to take the family to see: the Missouri Mavericks. They play in Independence and play teams in the Quad Cities and Flint, MI., among other teams.

Columbus Blue Jackets -- one of our members was drafted in the 2nd round by them this year.  I have no clue what a starting contract in the NHL is, but I am assuming that this 18 year old has just become about the highest paid person in our congregation!

C-A-P-S, Caps! Caps Caps!

Have a good friend in the Capitals' front office.  During my bachelor days when I worked a few blocks from the arena, I was a regular.  Much less regular now that I work out in the exurbs and have four kids.

And I would be remiss if I didn't mention my alma mater, Miami University, which has become a national power in collegiate hockey.  Oh, to have the last 1:30 of the national championship game in 2009 back!  (Blew a 3-1 lead, lost in OT.)

As a student at Concordia Senior College, Fort Wayne,
I received free tickets to the minor league hockey team,
the Fort Wayne Komets.

As a seminarian at Concordia, St. Louis, I received free
tickets to the NHL St. Louis Blues.

Bottom Line:  I have never paid to see professional hockey.

I would not go to see the game of the team that misspelled its name.

Uh, if you lived in Ft. Wayne you would be wrong.  Or in the case of the IHL you are wrong.  I lived in Ft Wayne as a kid and they are indeed the Komets.

Nobody has ever accused Charles Austin of being familiar
with the sports world.  In his youth he was not found on
his high school football, basketball, or baseball team.  In his
manhood he was not turned on to ESPN, Sports Illustrated,
or season tickets to the New York Yankees.  In his retirement
he is building sand castles and singing barbershop.

Bottom Line:   The talents of Charles Austin are in the Kitchen
as he cooks French dishes, and as a Wordsmith with his Roget's
Thesaurus.

To be fair, I think Charles' point was that he would never root for a team that intentionally spells its name contrary to convention (e.g., "Komets").  I believe he opts not to listen to Motley Crue for the same reason.

It's all about romance.  This from the Komets web site:

"Many have wondered about Komets being spelled with a "K". Berg [the founder] did it. He wanted to have a name that suggested speed, flash, excitement. And he spelled it with a "K" instead of a "C" after his wife. Her name was Kathryn but she always went by Kay."
