ESV and 2 Peter 1:19

An interesting translation issue in view of the Transfiguration:

19 And we have something more sure, the prophetic word, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts,
2 Peter 1:19 (ESV)

19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
2 Peter 1:19 (KJV)

as compared to:

19 And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts;
2 Peter 1:19 (NKJV)

19 And we have the word of prophecy made more sure; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day-star arise in your hearts:
2 Peter 1:19 (ASV)

19 So we have confirmation of the words of the prophets; and you will be right to pay attention to it as to a lamp for lighting a way through the dark, until the dawn comes and the morning star rises in your minds.
2 Peter 1:19 (NJB)

19 So we regard the words of the prophets as confirmed beyond all doubt. You're doing well by paying attention to their words. Continue to pay attention as you would to a light that shines in a dark place as you wait for day to come and the morning star to rise in your hearts.
2 Peter 1:19 (GW)

So in many of the translations "bebaioteron" is adjusted (?) to read "made" more sure. Is the reason because of the "echomen" - adjusting it from have to hold?  Possible - but why then do ESV interlinears note that Bebaioteron is the source of "made" being placed into it.  The ESV reads far more like the KJV, where it is comparative - not a causitive (the prophetic word has more of our confidence because they witnessed the transfiguration - as opposed to the prophetic word is more sure than the eyewitness account of the transfiguration.

So what do you think?

Checked out the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture - it has Augustine talking about how how the witness of the Apostles of the transfiguration is in confirmation of the prophesies.  Hence, "the prophetic word was thus made more certain."

You're right, the ESV is not very clear ... methinks I'll use the NASB this week.  "So we have the prophetic word made more sure, ..."
