O God of spirits and of all flesh,
   You have trampled down death
   and have abolished
   the power of the devil,
   giving life to Your world.
Give rest to the soul
   of Your departed servant Joseph
   in a place of light,
   in a place of repose,
   in a place of refreshment,
where there is no pain,
   sorrow, and suffering.
As a good and loving God,
forgive every sin he has committed
   in thought, word or deed,
for there is no one who lives
   and is sinless.
You alone are without sin.
Your righteousness
   is an everlasting righteousness,
   and Your word is truth.
For You are the resurrection,
   the life
and the repose of Your departed servant Joseph
Christ our God,
and to You we give glory,
   with Your eternal Father
   and Your all holy,
   good and life-giving Spirit,
now and forever and to the ages of ages, Amen.

May His Memory be Eternal!

Eileen Bentz Smith just informed me that her husband, Joe, died suddenly this morning. While she has great comfort in the Resurrection promise, she covets your  prayers for her and the family. May God bless our dear sister in this time of loss.

Donna

Donna, do you know any details about funeral arrangements?

Peace, JOHN

Sorry, John, I was away from the board for a bit. I see another poster found the obituary.

This morning I went to Joe Smith's funeral Mass. It was very well done, led by Fr. Michael (last name?) and two other priests who grieve Joe's passing. Fr. Michael's homily was a powerful witness to the resurrection as was the entire Mass. Pr. Robin (last name?), Eileen's pastor, read the two lessons (Isaiah 25 and Romans 6). I was delighted to meet Eileen face to face and was able to speak to her only briefly. Having lost my mate of many, many years, I know how hard this is for her and I assured her that God would remain with her through the coming years.

Peace, JOHN

John, I am so grateful that you attended the Mass, and I feel you represented those of  us here who could not attend. My heart aches for Eileen. Your being there and understanding so well was priceless.

I think Eileen understands that I was indeed there for all of you.

I might mention that Fr. Michael began the homily gratefully acknowledging that we were a gathering of Lutherans and Catholics. Afterwards he told me how impressive it was to hear all those Lutherans singing the hymns, "My Hope is Built on Nothing Less" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives". "My Hope" was sung to Melita (LBW 294) which is the tune of the Navy Hymn; Joe was a Marine and Fr. Michael was a Navy chaplain. (I was reminded of my wife Lorna's funeral where lots of Lutherans sang so very well; the Roman Catholics found most impressive.) When I told Fr. Michael that Eileen was an alumna of my congregation's High School, he stated how well grounded in her faith Eileen is.    :)

Dear Friends in Christ,

I've been wanting to post for several weeks to thank all of you for your prayers on the death of my husband, Joe.  I want to especially thank Pastor Donna Smith for sharing this news and Pastor John Hannah for being with me at Joe's funeral.  Quite honestly, I felt that I was held in prayer by all of you through the gift of Pastor Hannah's presence.  I will admit that the past weeks have been quite difficult and my lethargy prevented me from posting sooner.  Each time I wanted to respond to a post I felt I first needed to acknowledge your gift of prayer.

The church has many forms, many expressions - and I am grateful to be part of the expression of the church on this site for I am reminded that as heated as our discussions may become we are at heart united in Christ's love and therefore we share that love with one another.

Eileen
