intro

Greetings all:
Well, in searching for a place to post an 'intro,' this sort of looked like the spot. Apologies if I've misfired.
It hit me this a.m. that even tho I've been lurking here for a number of years and have a few classmates & acquaintances on this forum, my very first post was on a topic, as opposed to an intro.....so thought I should take a minute to say hello.

I'm a MoSyn pastor, currently serving my second call at Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit, Elk Grove Village, IL. If you're wondering where that is, just follow the planes into O'hare. They all fly over our house. I graduated from CTS-FW in '03, but hung around an extra year in order to serve a CPE residency at Lutheran Hospital of IN, under the brilliant tutelage of Rev. John Peterson. That residency year was, by far, the high point of my training for ministry. My first call was to a dual situation--pastor of Faith Lutheran Church, Butler PA and Associate Chaplain of Concordia Lutheran Ministries, Cabot PA. I served there for 3 years. I've now been here at LCHS for one year.

On the personal side, I'm a 2nd career man, mid 40s, married for 24yrs, 2 kids--one just started high school this year, one in 7th grade. Western PA was nice, but it's **GREAT** to be back in the midwest.

Welcome Pastor, "lurking" a couple of years Huh....how did you do that? I tried to "lurk" but well........ Care to speak more about the quote from "Presence". or does it speak for itself (very well indeed).

In that quote from The Presence, which is in my office & I'm at home so I can't give a longer version thereof at present, von Schenk is essentially coming down on *both* the Lutheran practice of the Morning Service [ante-communion only] and the Episcopalian practice of Morning Prayer as the *primary* services for Sunday. He was lobbying for the Mass as the primary service. In his day he was a voice crying in the wilderness (I think that book was written in the 40s). These days we're closer to his ideal, tho probably less so over all in the MoSyn than in ELCA & certainly the ECUSA.

I have heard such noneucharistic Sunday services rightly critiqued as "reading the menu without eating the supper."

Welcome Pastor.  I am a layman from Dayton, Ohio.  I have a question for you, though-is Chicagoland considered part of the midwest?

Western PA was nice, but it's **GREAT** to be back in the midwest.

I've got the opposite point of view.  As someone who grew up in western PA and now lives and serves a parish in the midwest (Indiana), I greatly miss the rolling hills, the winding roads, and the thrill of Pittsburgh Steeler football every week from September through (usually) mid to late January.  I do enjoy the midwest, but for me it just doesn't compare to PA.
