Your Turn / Prayer Request
« on: April 24, 2022, 08:10:09 AM »
What weather in our part of the country!  In the past few days here in Crookston MN we have seen heavy snow, high winds, severe thunderstorms, hail, torrential rains, tornadoes, and now the worst flooding in my 20+ years here.  The city has already given up on several streets and sections, barricading them off and building new levees to protect the remaining parts.  Today is Confirmation Sunday, and as I get ready I can see/hear the heavy equipment right next to the church, feverishly trying to keep ahead of the water.  The phone just rang, with the third automated call asking for help with sandbagging (the others came at 12:30 AM and 3:30 AM).  Your prayers would be welcome!

Your Turn / Interview with the Babylon Bee
« on: March 12, 2022, 09:21:57 AM »
Kongsvinger Lutheran Church (AALC), 15 minutes or so out of Grand Forks ND, had a fundraiser last night.  Recipients of the money raised were Lutherans for Life and the Grand Forks Women's Pregnancy Center.  Guest speaker was Kyle Mann of the Babylon Bee, speaking about the nature and use of satire for Christians.  The video starts with info/presentations by the Women's Pregnancy Center and Lutherans for Life; the presentation by Mr. Mann begins about 15 minutes into the video.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRXt_zJGG1U

Your Turn / Exorcism?
« on: February 26, 2022, 05:08:46 PM »
Last week I was visiting one of our shut-in members.  She told me that recently she has been hearing scratching noises and suspected she had mice in her apartment ( a very clean, modern apartment in a very clean, modern building).  She contacted the building superintendent, who could find no signs of mice but who put in traps -- both sticky and old-fashioned spring types.  No mice have been caught or seen.  She has called in exterminators, who have told her they too can find no signs of mice.  Yet she reports she continues to hear the sounds, in her kitchen and living room and, at night when she is in bed, in the bedroom.  She is now wondering if it may be demonic activity and asked me about exorcism.

I told her that, several years back, another woman had similar thoughts about her house in town.  At that time I went to the house and said some prayers and used the rite for blessing a home.  I also gave her a crucifix and suggested she pray or read Scriptures or sing hymns when she felt evil "presences" in the home.  I also reminded her of her baptism and to call upon God's promises made to her there.  That woman reported that she did not have any problems afterwards.  I mentioned to this shut-in member that I could do the same thing for her and her apartment, which suggestion was favorably received.  My question for the board is whether you have any other suggestions -- I am hoping to call her this week about a time to do the blessing of the home.  Any thoughts and suggestions would be welcome.  Thank you!

Your Turn / Lessons and Carols
« on: November 20, 2021, 03:30:11 PM »
I just had a request from our Sunday School music director for services of lessons and carols that she can use as a jumping-off point.  Anyone have such an order they would care to share?  Thanks.

Your Turn / Bjarne Teigen Reformation Lectures
« on: October 26, 2021, 09:28:00 AM »
Anyone else attending these lectures at Bethany College in Mankato, MN?  This will be my first time; I usually go to the Good Shepherd Institute at the Fort Wayne seminary but this is closer (and cheaper) AND the speakers all have LCMS connections.  https://blc.edu/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/reformation_lectures_flyer_2021.pdf

Your Turn / Bible Study Recommendations?
« on: June 21, 2021, 10:54:35 AM »
Yesterday the lay leader of our Sunday morning adult Bible class approached me and said there was a desire among the class to have a study about government, especially in areas in which the Christian may disagree with governmental practices.  This class meets between services here in town, while I am leading services at the country church, so I am not around to teach it myself.  Looking at CPH, I did not find much.  Does anyone have any recommendations?

Your Turn / Need Help Finding...
« on: July 13, 2020, 11:45:37 AM »
A while back, someone posted a link of a video presentation made to law students about what concealed carry permit-holders should say/do when dealing with law enforcement.  Can anyone refresh my memory as to who was the speaker, or where I can find the link?  Thanks.

Your Turn / Singing in Church
« on: June 07, 2020, 05:56:02 PM »
We began holding public services again on May 31.  The last two weeks, we have spoken the liturgy and only used two hymns (to open and close the service) because of a concern about singing as a means of spreading the COVID-19 virus.  But I, and others, miss the singing.  So, my questions are: how many of you holding public services are singing?  Have you made concessions in that area?  How many hymns?  Speaking the liturgy?  Any feedback from members?

Your Turn / Pre-Filled Communion Cups
« on: June 02, 2020, 09:50:32 AM »
Is anyone using these?  The only ones I am seeing have grape juice (not wine) and am wondering if, I can find them with wine, they are something we should look at for the future.  Thanks.

Your Turn / LCMS Rural/Small Town Ministry Conference
« on: September 14, 2019, 10:01:53 AM »
The Rural and Small Town Ministry Conference is being held in Minneapolis in mid-November.  I have never attended but am considering it this year, as it is relatively close ( I usually go the Good Shepherd Institute at the Fort Wayne seminary in November).  Has anyone any experience with it?  Is it a large group?  How helpful did you find it?  Anyone planning on attending this particular event (apparently there will not be one in 2020, or maybe in years to come at all)?
