Or for June only:"There was a 34% increase in the number of murders over the same period, last year. There were also 45% more shootings."

Their murders did not become a viral video on the internet. We could also talk about how many people have been shot and killed in Chicago over the last month - and they don't make national news. (I don't even know how many make local Chicago news.)
"At least 336 people have been murdered in Chicago through July 2, according to the Chicago Police Department; because murders typically increase in the summer, the city is on track to match the 778 deaths in 2016, its deadliest year since the mid-1990s. (New York City, with almost three times the population, had 176 murders as of June 28.)"

Speaking of Rev. Doctor R. Guy Bishop Erwin, I don't think there is any danger that his regime will be more hostile to students who hold traditional views on marriage than the current regime is.  He might even be more respectful of people with traditional views, if Pastor Tibbett's experience is indicative of his attitude.

It could turn to be a shrewd decision. He has to raise money or fall into the trap Southern did with LR’s Faustian bargain. If he can do that and operate above board, he will be a big improvement. It may also be that he is positioned to be able create some sort of order out of the chaos with students and faculty because none of the usual trump cards can be played (except being cis-gendered, I guess).

We get the daily feed from Governor Cuomo here in NY; maybe that's nationwide since it's the epicenter state.  Anyway, he continues to offer "next step" questions at his press conferences, which kind of remind me of the way his dad would speak and interact, more philosophically.  Today he said that the national solution being offered right now is to print money.  And he said, you know at some point there have to be some services rendered for money printing to work - some exchange of value.  I think that takes a whack at the whacky solution of just paying everyone $1000 a month ($2000?) to stay home for a year.  At some point along the way, $1000 will be worth about ten cents.

Odd that a Democrat would raise that issue (my party seems to want to give everything away for free), but he is right.
Last year we (taxpayers) paid $749 Billion in interest on the current debt. Adding another $2 Trillion to the debt is indeed frightening.

Oh my gosh, Chuck, you still have that stuff around? You need to do some pruning, my friend!  ;D

But interesting that 14 years ago not quite 50% of ELCA churches offered the Eucharist weekly at the principle service. I imagine we've made some progress since then, but if this really mattered to the powers that be, we'd have more recent statistics and there would be a continuing but gentle urging in that direction.
Heh...I have every year since 1988. I'm a stats nut, you know.

I wonder if those statistics were ever published anywhere? Oh, and then those statistics would now be 14 years old! Then there's the question of whether the current staff people even know such old statistics exist. When I asked a couple of years ago, the answer was not "We have statistics, but they are 10 years old" but "No, we don't have any statistics on that."

Pastor Fienen:
It would have been really helpful if the CDC and other government entities could have started a year ago getting us ready to combat this pandemic. They could have been stockpiling masks and other supplies and preparing a vaccine. So, is this an example of Trump's short sightedness and general incompetence?

Me:
Did you not read that more than a year ago, the White House virtually closed the office in the CDC that was to plan for and deal with pandemics?

Before we descend into the standard rounds of prevarication and Schadenfreude, has anyone been able to find the Luther quote?
I found references in AZ Quotes and the Duluth Reader. Neither site provides a source, only attribution to Luther.

The notion of a Near East, a Middle East, and a Far East is rooted in their relative distance and direction from Whitehall. Of course, the Chinese considered themselves the Middle Kingdom and the seventeenth century Japanese expelled the “southern barbarians.”
To be precise, east and west are relative to the prime longitude (0.00) which runs through Greenwich (the Royal Observatory). Whitehall is slightly east at 0°07'19.20" E

The link at the bottom for the full statement didn't work.

It does, you just need to be persistent.

When Einstein was disturbed by the implications of Quantum Physics, he stated publicly that, "God does not play nice with the universe." Niels Bohr told Einstein, "And who are you to tell God what he can and cannot do?"
I heard it differently: "God does not play dice with the universe.
Of course, your version may be the right one.  :'(

Peace,
Michael
You are correct, Father.

Arguments like this thread remind me of a quote from the Saturday Evening Post.

"I’m not going to answer any more of your questions. I hope you won’t take this personally, but I am reminded of something my old uncle told me, long ago, back on the farm. He said. ‘What’s the sense of wrestling with a pig? You both get all over muddy . . . and the pig likes it.'"
