Your Turn / Re: Military BibleStick
« on: October 07, 2011, 05:21:07 PM »
Talked with a military chaplain former classmate of mine in Des Moines, and he said that he could never fill the requests fast enough, and loved them.

That's what I heard from the current and former/retired military folks I spoke with as well.

We did a special BibleStick offering here a few weeks ago and folks were very supportive.  My congregation has supported Faith Comes By Hearing in past years, but for their foreign mission program, I think.  I did not show a video or anything like that, but they did send me a BibleStick to pass around during coffee so everyone can see how it worked, and that was a big hit.  All of the audio can be downloaded for free from their website; I burned a chapter from Galatians onto a CD and played part of it during the announcements.

The representative that kept calling to check in with me was definitely somewhere in the Baptist spectrum, but was helpful and not too pushy.

Bethel Lutheran Church, Bemidji, MN will be taking their first vote to leave the ELCA this coming Sunday, September 18, 2011.  If both votes are successful, they will be seeking affiliation with the NALC.

Please keep this congregation and their pastor in your prayers.

We eat the bread of teaching, drink wine of wisdom, are given here a taste of the kingdom. Together joined, the greatest and the least, we all are one at Wisdom's holy feast.
I know it's supposed to be based on Scriptural images, but really, shouldn't a "hymn of the day" in a Eucharistic service make SOME overt mention of Christ, or even of God?

We sang that one at a synod assembly a couple of years ago when I was on internship.  I turned to my supervising pastor and asked "just who exactly is this 'wisdom' to whom we refer?"

I've looked through the catalog of Luther Seminary and I do not find a required anti-racism workshop.  One can elect to take courses about the topic, but I don't see a requirement for it.  There IS a requirement for a cross-cultural course, but that is not the same thing.

Attending a "Dismantling Racism" workshop is required at Luther Seminary before a student embarks on their cross-cultural experience (often completed during January Term).  At least that was the case several years ago.  Students can also opt to take the workshop in conjunction with a course for credit when it is offered by the faculty.
