I always pick the verses (the tyrant must be in our GenX blood, Mark  ;) ). If you have a copy of Nesper's Biblical Texts, that can be a good source of ideas. If you don't have Nesper, I think CTSFW is still selling a spiral-bound reprint. It's been out of print for eons and to my knowledge, no one else has compiled such a useful resource.

Should platforms such as Twitter who are not publishers be considered like public accommodations?

Or, since they control the infrastructure, public utilities?

From a recent essay by Victor Davis Hanson entitled "Our Animal Farm":
Quote
A new Orwellian phrase is “free speech is not free reach”—as leftists become the intellectual inheritors of the racists of the open-housing fights of the 1950s and 1960. The old racist boilerplate of apartment owners and realtors was “You can live anywhere you want, just not here.” The new hate mantra of Silicon Valley cartels is, “You can tweet or socially post anywhere you like—if you can manage to find a place.”

Interesting demographics, and the same would be true, I guess, for Don's part of the world.  What then is the percentage of Lutherans in Jamestown?  Must be pretty high.  My guess is that "ELCA" means "former ALC" in that part of the world, and maybe designated by heritage - Scandinavian, as opposed to the more German LCMS.

Interestingly, "former ALC" in this region (I'm about 90 miles SW of Jamestown) is a pretty mixed bag. There are lots of "old ALC" (1930) congregations in these parts, many of which were founded in the 1880s-1890s by Iowa Synod missionaries to German immigrants. This is the land of Germans from Russia, especially to the west and SW of where Tom serves. Same plainspoken personality, different dialect and vocabulary. Absolutely love it here.

Double crumb?

For the Germans from Russia, "kuchen" means round and custard with a light cinnamon-sugar sprinkle topping (see attached). Many variations, of course. But you can't have a funeral luncheon or any serious "lunch" without them. Rhubarb, prune, and plain ol' cream are my favorite.

Does moderator Peter Speckhard have authority to limit or remove Charles Austin's posts?

I regard Pr. Speckhard's posts as an expression of his political views.. In not a few instances they do not reflect mine.  The same is true for some of his theological posts.

In many instances I agree with Charles.  At other times I have a slightly different take.  For the most part I think he represents the give and take which ALPB Founders intended for conversation among fellow Lutherans.

Marie Meyer

If Peter doesn't have the authority to limit or remove Charles Austin's posts (or any poster's posts!) then there is absolutely no point in having a moderator.

Exactly. Peter and Richard both do a great job at a thankless task.

Seriously, folks, let’s not go down this road. This place, such as it has been lately, is one of the few worthwhile places on the interwebs. Let them call balls and strikes as they see fit. PM them if you disagree with their calls if you must. But let’s not make this place one more tribal enclave. Please. This rural, rather isolated pastor begs you.

To again borrow Macbeth's words, their idiot-told tales are, "full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."

Then ignore them. Please. Seriously. Ignore them.

The nominee has only been in her current position for three years.  Other nominees have had more experience.   I am not suggesting that she is not intelligent, I am saying that her experience is thin.   Look it up for yourself. Don't take my word for it.

How many years was Justice Kagan on the Court of Appeals before her nomination?  What other courts had she served on?

I think I said before that if the Republicans dumped Trump and nominated someone else, I would even consider voting for that person just to reward  them for their common sense.

I have a difficult time believing this, based on your history here.

I can believe he would consider it and then decide not to vote for that candidate.

I'm certain Pr. Austin is a big fan of Mitt Romney's now that he voted to convict President Trump in the Senate trial.  And yet I am just as certain that he did not vote for Romney in 2012.

This is hitting every nail on every head.

Strange New Respect is just a catchphrase for Democratic gaslighting.  "Why can't this guy be more like Romney?"  Meanwhile in 2012 the same folks were accusing (or excusing the guy accusing) Romney of wanting to re-enslave black Americans.
And quite similar to Dreher's Law of Merited Impossibility: "Oh, that will never, ever happen! But when it does, you bigots will deserve it."

I'm still curious from our Democratic friends what the presumptive candidate Joe Biden has to offer that should cause any of us to reconsider and vote for him.  I don't hear much about him or from him, although I realize the national election is still over 5 months away.  There has been some concern about his abilities.  Unfortunately his all too frequent verbal stumbling, which has long characterized him in one way or another, has served to insert some question regarding his fitness for the office. Do those who support Biden feel that he is fully up to the task?

I bet he'd threaten to take you outside and kick your a__ for asking such a horsesh__ question. :)

If you all are not following the Twitter account "President Joe Biden (So-Called)," you should be.

https://twitter.com/biden4pres

I know the Twitter account is not actually Joe Biden.  But are the tweets actual quotes of Biden?

No.

And what makes it hilarious is this -- they could be, and it would be hard for you to know the difference.
The Biden Insult Bot is also rather amusing.

Your Turn / Re: ELCA prays to "Mother God"
« on: May 06, 2020, 09:51:49 PM »
I object to addressing God as "Mother," but as usual I don't see the issue as first and foremost whether we can or not. Rather, why would anyone choose to? I object to the desire behind the call for an alternate to "Father" more than I object to whatever alternative people come up with. Why not have God's Word shape our understanding of God, our selves, our neighbors, and the world rather than starting from our own elf-understanding and imposing that on God?

Wait, wait, wait -- "elf-understanding"?  Now they want to make God into an elf?!??  :)
Doesn't everyone? Be honest...

Regardless of who is on the ballot, we will only have the choice of flawed human beings.  We ae always voting for the lesser of two evils.

He's running again.  "Vote for the Greatest Evil: Cthulhu for President."

"What really fuels change are the sacrifices we make of people like you. We don’t have to accept a system that drowns out your voice. We can obliterate it. Join us."

Steven- I  am surprised you did not go for the real candidate of change: Morgoth Bauglir. Make Middle Earth Dark Again!

And let us certainly not forget SMOD.
