Your Turn / Congregation sued by ELCA
« on: May 26, 2022, 09:20:49 PM »
Who controls a congregation's property?

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - A Georgia church is battling in court for the right to sell its own property. Their opponent? Their own now-former larger church organization.

Members of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Thunderbolt say they are devastated. The church, which has less than a dozen members, has been a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) for decades.

Your Turn / Anonymity
« on: October 30, 2020, 08:19:15 AM »
Here is something I have ofttimes pondered as an aid to ALPB and its ministry.
Supposing that in order to be on the ALPB online forum, you had to subscribe to the journal and the newsletter, with the price raised to $35 per year?
The subscription price would also give one reading access to the ALPB online forum, but in order to post on the ALPB online forum, you would pay an additional $25 per year.
And, of course, no anonymity allowed.
 ;D ;D ;D

I think we need a more general ban on mentioning anonymity in all threads not specifically about anonymity -- as we had in the voter fraud thread.  Every time anonymity is mentioned the thread drifts to that subject.  I've started this thread so folks can discuss it if they really feel the need.  Please leave that discussion here instead of polluting other threads.

Your Turn / NYC Restrictions on Religious Services Unconstitutional
« on: June 27, 2020, 11:09:37 AM »
As I've been saying, general rules that apply equally are OK.  Targeting religious activities with different rules is not.

New York's Pandemic-Inspired Restrictions on Church and Synagogue Services Are Unconstitutional, a Federal Judge Rules

In this case, Sharpe writes, "it is plain to this court that the broad limits of that executive latitude have been exceeded." His injunction requires Cuomo, de Blasio, and New York Attorney General Letitia James to refrain from "enforcing any indoor gathering limitations against plaintiffs" stricter than those imposed on "nonessential" businesses such as stores and salons, "provided that plaintiffs follow social distancing requirements as set forth in the applicable executive orders and guidance." Cuomo, de Blasio, and James are also forbidden to enforce "any limitation for outdoor gatherings," except for the general rules that also apply to secular gatherings.

Your Turn / Church Shooting

What is the best way to protect those present at a church?

Quote from: Jack Wilson
The events at West Freeway Church of Christ put me in a position that I would hope no one would have to be in, but evil exists and I had to take out an active shooter in church," he said. "I am very sad in the loss of two dear friends and brothers in CHRIST, but evil does exist in this world and I and other members are not going to allow evil to succeed.

Quote from: Joe Biden
Dealing with firearms, it is irrational, with all due respect to the governor of Texas, irrational what they are doing.  On the very day you see a mass shooting … and we’re talking about loosening access to have guns, to be able to take them into places of worship, it’s just absolutely irrational. It’s totally irrational.

For those who only believe what they read in the Gray Lady:

Your Turn / Confession and Florida Law
« on: June 15, 2018, 09:02:12 PM »
An interesting article about how Florida law and confession:

The Florida Evidence Code apparently requires clergy to testify about confessions to them, if the penitent allows them to do so -- but Catholic doctrine forbids any such testimony, regardless of the penitent's wishes. Which should prevail?

I know of congregations which use two of these choices.  One of them changed its choice about three years ago.  (If I read the poll instructions correctly, you should be able to pick multiple options.)

Your Turn / Martin Luther Bobblehead
« on: August 21, 2017, 09:11:48 PM »
On October 21, the Milwaukee Admirals will give away Martin Luther bobbleheads.  The dolls will depict Martin Luther wearing a Milwaukee Admirals sweater.

Your Turn / Copyright and Posting Articles
« on: November 20, 2016, 09:21:33 PM »
I decided to pull this one out of the election thread since I think it is turning into an interesting discussion...

James S. Rustad writes (re my posting):
Hmmm...  I thought reprinting a work in its entirety, especially with no commentary, was a violation of copyright.

I comment:
You thought wrong. In this case.

Indeed. It's fair use.

Please explain why.  I am truly interested in understanding why this would be considered fair use.

Sure. Here's an example:

"Judge Rules that Reposting an Entire Article Without Permission Is ‘Fair Use’"

The original Wired article that the Adweek blog linked gives much more information about the case.  It includes this key point:

"It’s not often that republishing an entire work without permission is deemed fair use."

The Wired article goes on to discuss fair use quite well, including that it is decided on the facts in each case.  So one user of one blog successfully defending posting an entire article to that blog doesn't mean that the next post of an entire article will be treated the same way.  Pastor Austin's comment that "You thought wrong. In this case." is exactly correct.

Fair use is every bit as murky as I thought.

Your Turn / To turn a phrase?
« on: October 14, 2014, 09:59:36 AM »
The purpose of this thread is to point out examples of interesting phrases used in posts.

Some "individualism" ain't all bad, Lou. I believe it is better than locking one's mind, meditation and morality totally and without question into whatever one's favorite "system," whether of faith, politics or art decrees to be the cat's pajamas, bee's knees or frosting on the cupcake.

Your Turn / Grace Lutheran - News From Other Sources
« on: May 15, 2013, 12:48:47 PM »
These accounts are very different from those told by those who are now part of Saving Grace.

Truly makes one wonder who to believe, given that few of us have any first-hand knowledge of the events involving Grace Lutheran.
